Before the great cities of Lumeris rose from stone, before the Fae divided themselves into their Six Courts, and before the Draksen carved their magnificent kingdoms into the mountains and skies, there was only the sleeping world.
The earliest surviving scriptures tell of a time when Lumeris existed as a barren celestial sphere, drifting beneath the watchful light of the Broken Moons. Its mountains were lifeless, its oceans still, and its vast plains devoid of even the smallest blade of grass.
Yet something stirred beneath its surface.
Deep within the world's crystalline heart, a consciousness awakened. It had no name, no form, and no knowledge of the heavens beyond. It knew only the silence surrounding it and an overwhelming desire to fill that silence with life.
That consciousness became Vaeloria.
Unlike gods who descended from celestial realms or were born from the worship of mortals, Vaeloria emerged from the world itself. She was not merely a deity who claimed dominion over the earth. She was the earth given thought, spirit, and purpose.
When Vaeloria first awakened, the mountains trembled. Great fractures spread across the barren continents, and from those wounds came rivers of luminous green energy.
This energy, known to ancient scholars as the First Breath, flowed through the land and transformed its lifeless stone.
Thus began the Age of First Growth.
Vaeloria did not create life as a sculptor creates a statue. She nurtured it, allowing existence to develop according to its own nature.
Her first children were not mortal races, but the Primordial Guardians: enormous beings formed from living stone, ancient timber, crystalline growths, and elemental energy. These creatures wandered the newborn continents, shaping the wilderness and protecting the fragile life emerging beneath their feet.
Among them were:
As life flourished, Vaeloria discovered that creation could not exist without change. Forests grew old. Creatures perished. Mountains crumbled, and rivers changed their courses.
At first, the Mother mourned every passing. But in time, she understood that death was not the enemy of life. Death was the promise that life would begin again.
From this understanding arose her most sacred teaching:
“Nothing born of the earth is ever truly lost. What falls shall nourish what rises.”
This became the foundation of the Eternal Cycle, the sacred balance between birth, growth, death, and renewal.
Vaeloria possesses no single permanent physical form. As the living consciousness of the world, she may manifest in countless ways, although ancient accounts describe several favored appearances.
Her most recognizable form is that of a tall, graceful woman with skin resembling warm earth or polished bronze. Her long hair flows like living vines, threaded with blossoms, moss, and autumn leaves. Her emerald eyes contain shifting patterns of forests and distant mountains. Her gown appears woven from bark, roots, leaves, and luminous crystal.
When enraged or defending the world, Vaeloria may manifest as a colossal figure of living stone, with mountains forming her shoulders and forests growing across her body. Her voice sounds like grinding continents, and her footsteps cause earthquakes.
Her most sacred manifestation is an enormous ancient tree whose roots reach deep into the crystalline heart of Lumeris. Its branches stretch beyond sight, and its leaves shimmer with the colors of every season. Those who sleep beneath its boughs sometimes hear the heartbeat of the world.
Although Vaeloria predates the civilizations of Lumeris, her influence remains deeply intertwined with the histories of its many races.
Among the Fae, Vaeloria is remembered as the Mother Beneath the Roots.
During the earliest days of Fae civilization, long before the War of Veils and the Sundering, the Fae discovered places where the natural world radiated extraordinary magical power. These sacred groves were believed to be locations where Vaeloria's consciousness touched the mortal world.
The Nature Court, particularly those dwelling within Sylvaranth, continues to honor her as one of the oldest divine forces of the world.
Tharalion Rootfather and the ancient guardians of the Nature Court teach that their responsibility is not to control the wilderness but to protect its right to exist.
However, not all Fae interpret Vaeloria's teachings equally. Some believe civilization must coexist with nature, while others argue that cities, kingdoms, and mortal ambition have become wounds upon the earth. These differences have caused centuries of religious and political conflict among her followers.
The Stonehearts of Verdantreach possess one of the strongest cultural connections to Vaeloria. Their oldest legends claim that the first Earth Draksen emerged from crystal-lined caverns where Vaeloria's heartbeat could be heard through the stone.
Although their origins remain debated, the Earth Draksen consider the deep crystalline formations beneath Verdantreach sacred.
The Rootspire Council maintains ancient chambers where druids, elemental scholars, and spiritual guardians gather to listen for the Mother's guidance.
Among the Stonehearts, the expression “May the Mother hold your roots” is both a blessing and a farewell.
Their greatest spiritual responsibility is the protection of the Deep Roots, immense channels of living energy believed to connect Verdantreach with the Heart of Lumeris.
Among the Orcish peoples, Vaeloria is revered in different ways.
Some Lunari researchers even speculate that the mysterious Veyrite found beneath certain ancient cities is connected to the same primordial energies that awakened Vaeloria. The goddess has never confirmed this theory.
Dwarven traditions frequently portray Vaeloria as the Keeper of the Deep Stone. They believe every mountain possesses a spirit and that mining must be conducted with reverence.
In certain ancient dwarven settlements, miners leave small offerings of polished stone before opening a new passage.
To take from the earth without gratitude is considered an act of arrogance. To destroy a mountain solely for wealth is considered a sacrilege.
Among the Beastkin, particularly Centaurs, Satyrs, Minotaurs, and Wolven tribes, Vaeloria is closely associated with the Age of the Wild Gods. Some ancient tribal traditions claim she witnessed the formation of the Wild Pact and mourned its eventual shattering.
Centaurs honor her through seasonal journeys across sacred plains, while certain Wolven shamans believe their ancestral spirits rest within her eternal embrace.
To these peoples, Vaeloria represents the wilderness that existed before borders, thrones, and kingdoms.
Deep beneath the known continents of Lumeris exists a realm untouched by ordinary time. Known as the Everroot, this sacred domain is believed to lie at the point where the physical earth meets its spiritual essence.
Unlike celestial kingdoms, the Everroot does not exist entirely beyond the mortal world. It is woven through the deepest foundations of Lumeris, accessible only through ancient pathways, divine intervention, or extraordinary magical rituals.
The realm contains several sacred locations.
At the center of the Everroot rests an enormous crystalline formation, pulsing with golden-green energy. Each pulse is said to correspond to a heartbeat of Vaeloria herself.
An endless woodland containing spiritual representations of every plant species that has ever existed within Lumeris, including those lost to extinction.
A luminous underground river carrying the lingering essence of deceased creatures back into the Eternal Cycle. It is not a prison for souls, but a passage of renewal.
A labyrinth of ancient rock formations containing impressions of the world's earliest history. Some believe the truth of the Broken Moons is preserved within these stones.
A peaceful sanctuary where Vaeloria's physical manifestation rests during periods of divine withdrawal. Legends claim that disturbing her slumber could awaken earthquakes across entire continents.
Vaeloria is neither a goddess of unconditional kindness nor one of indiscriminate destruction.
She is patient beyond mortal comprehension, capable of watching civilizations rise and fall without intervening.
Her followers describe five sacred principles:
Vaeloria rarely punishes mortals for hunting, farming, mining, or building settlements. However, deliberate destruction without purpose, the poisoning of sacred waters, and magic that permanently corrupts living ecosystems may draw her attention.
Her wrath is slow to awaken. But once awakened, it is almost impossible to halt.
Vaeloria's power is greatest wherever the living earth remains connected to its primordial foundations.
| Divine Ability | Description |
|---|---|
| Heartbeat of the World | Senses disturbances in the land, including earthquakes, corruption, and destruction of ancient forests |
| Genesis Bloom | Causes barren landscapes to erupt with plant life, restoring fertility and damaged ecosystems |
| Stone Mother's Embrace | Raises enormous walls of stone, reshapes mountains, or creates protective earthen sanctuaries |
| Eternal Renewal | Restores devastated natural environments over time, though she cannot freely reverse every death |
| Voice of the Wild | Communicates with animals, plants, elemental spirits, and ancient guardians |
| Roots of Judgment | Summons colossal roots capable of restraining armies, monsters, or powerful magical beings |
| Primordial Awakening | Awakens dormant Stonewardens, Verdant Titans, and other ancient protectors |
| Mother's Lament | Unleashes devastating earthquakes, landslides, and storms of stone when the world itself is threatened |
Vaeloria's connection to Lumeris is both her greatest strength and her greatest vulnerability. When she acts through the Heart of Lumeris, the world responds to her will. However, great interventions can disturb the very balance she protects.
An earthquake meant to destroy an invading army might also devastate nearby villages. A forest grown overnight might consume settlements and displace existing creatures.
For this reason, Vaeloria prefers to work through chosen guardians rather than intervene directly.
Vaeloria is served by several orders of divine and primordial beings.
Ancient guardians composed of living wood, stone, and crystalline energy. They protect sacred groves, forgotten temples, and locations where the earth's spiritual energy flows close to the surface.
Small nature spirits resembling humanoid figures made of moss, mushrooms, bark, and flowers. They are generally peaceful and often guide lost travelers away from dangerous wilderness.
Immense primordial beings that sleep beneath mountain ranges and ancient forests. Their awakening is considered a sign that the balance of Lumeris faces an extraordinary threat.
A rare order of immortal feminine spirits who serve as Vaeloria's messengers. They appear as beautiful figures with bark-like skin, flowering hair, and glowing emerald eyes. Each Daughter is bound to a particular sacred location and cannot willingly abandon it without divine permission.
Vaeloria's worship is ancient, decentralized, and deeply connected to the natural world. Her followers rarely construct enormous temples within crowded cities. Instead, they prefer sacred groves, stone circles, underground sanctuaries, and shrines built around living trees.
The oldest known religious order devoted to Vaeloria. Its members are druids, shamans, healers, and spiritual guardians dedicated to preserving the Eternal Cycle. They maintain sacred lands, protect endangered creatures, and investigate unnatural disturbances. Their highest-ranking members are known as Rootspeakers.
An order primarily associated with the Earth Draksen and dwarven civilizations. Members specialize in protecting mountains, underground waterways, and ancient crystalline formations. They are particularly concerned with reckless mining and the misuse of primordial magic.
Priests and priestesses responsible for funeral rites, burial grounds, and ceremonies honoring the deceased. They teach that bodies should return naturally to the earth whenever possible. Their rituals focus on acceptance, remembrance, and renewal rather than the fear of death.
A controversial militant sect that believes civilization has grown dangerously destructive. Unlike the more peaceful orders, the Thorned Hand sometimes sabotages logging operations, mines, and settlements they consider threats to sacred wilderness. Although they claim to serve Vaeloria, many Rootspeakers condemn their methods. The goddess herself has never publicly declared either faction entirely correct.
Celebrated at the spring equinox, this festival honors the renewal of life. Worshippers plant seeds, bless farmland, and gather beneath flowering trees.
A solemn funeral ceremony in which the deceased are returned to the earth through burial, sacred groves, or other culturally appropriate rites.
Three days of silence and meditation practiced by certain dwarven and Earth Draksen communities. Participants seek guidance by listening to the movements of stone and underground water.
Observed during the longest night of the year. Followers light green and golden candles around ancient trees, symbolizing life enduring through darkness.
Before major construction, mining, or forest clearing, devotees offer seeds, clean water, and carefully chosen stones while promising to restore what they disturb.
An ancient staff carved from a branch of the original Heartroot. It can restore blighted land, accelerate natural growth, and summon protective roots. Its power diminishes when wielded for selfish destruction.
A living emerald crystal believed to contain a fragment of Vaeloria's first awakening. When planted in fertile soil, it can gradually transform a devastated region into a thriving sanctuary.
A divine circlet that changes appearance with the seasons. It grants its wearer an extraordinary awareness of natural cycles and the ability to influence local weather and plant growth.
The following blessings can be granted to Clerics, Druids, Shamans, or characters who earn Vaeloria's favor through roleplay. They use HP as the measure of life force.
| Blessing | Effect | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Mother's Touch | Restores 2d6 HP to a creature | Once per long rest |
| Barkskin Blessing | Grants +2 defense for 3 rounds | Once per encounter |
| Roots of Restraint | Restrains one target for up to 2 rounds | Target may attempt a Strength save each round |
| Verdant Renewal | Restores 3d8 HP and removes one minor natural poison | Once per long rest |
| Stoneheart Protection | Reduces incoming physical damage by 1d6 for 3 rounds | Once per long rest |
| Voice of the Grove | Allows basic communication with nearby plants and animals for 10 minutes | Three uses per long rest |
| Earth's Reclamation | Creates a 15-foot area of difficult terrain for 3 rounds | Once per encounter |
These are suggested divine abilities and may be adjusted to match the established Lumeris class and combat rules.
Vaeloria is among the oldest divine beings associated with Lumeris, but she does not consider herself ruler of the pantheon. She regards the gods as forces whose actions may nurture or endanger the balance of existence.
Among the oldest surviving texts within the Crescent Vaults is a fragmented prophecy known as The Mother's Last Dream. It describes a future in which the Broken Moons bleed crimson light upon the world, and the roots connecting Lumeris to its primordial heart begin to decay.
The prophecy states:
“When the moons bleed, and the mountains weep,
When the rivers forget the paths they keep,
When the ancient roots turn black beneath the stone,
The Mother shall awaken, wounded and alone.
Her children must choose what the world shall become,
For the heart of creation cannot outrun
The hunger that rises from darkness below,
Where even the oldest of roots dare not grow.”
Scholars disagree on its meaning. Some believe it foretells the return of an ancient entity that existed before Vaeloria's awakening. Others suspect the mysterious Veyrite spreading through forgotten underground chambers is connected to the corruption described in the prophecy.
The most troubling interpretation suggests that Vaeloria herself may one day become corrupted. Should the living consciousness of the world fall to darkness, every forest, mountain, and creature connected to her power could be affected.
This possibility is known among certain druids as The Great Withering.
Spoken by her followers at dawn, before planting, or when seeking protection.
Mother beneath the mountain,
Heart beneath the stone,
Let my roots grow deep,
Though I may walk alone.
Grant me strength like ancient oak,
Patience like the land,
And when my final breath is drawn,
Receive me in your hand.
From earth I came,
To earth I shall return,
Within your endless heart,
My spirit shall endure.
She represents the world's living foundation, an ancient divine presence whose influence predates the rise of kingdoms and whose power binds the wilderness, the deep earth, and the Eternal Cycle together. She can serve as a benevolent patron, an impartial judge of mortal ambition, or a terrifying primordial force when the survival of Lumeris is threatened.
“You may build your kingdoms upon my bones, little ones.
You may carve your names into my mountains
and raise your banners beneath my skies.
But remember this: long before your crowns were forged, I was here.
And when your thrones have crumbled into dust, I shall remain.”
— Vaeloria, the Eternal Mother.
