The Feywild — The Parallel Realm

◆

"A living parallel realm older than Lumeris itself — separated by catastrophe, felt in every spell cast across the mortal world."

The Parallel Realm

What Is the Feywild?

◆

The Feywild is not a separate world that exists at a distance from Lumeris. It is a parallel expression of the same world — a second layer of reality occupying the same space, accessible through the same geography, invisible to most mortal senses but felt in the quality of magic everywhere. The Primordial Fae did not build it. They were born in it. It is as old as Lumeris itself.

Where Lumeris is a world of physical matter, geography, and the laws of converged planes, the Feywild is a world of pure magical current, emotion made landscape, and elemental forces given form. A mountain in Lumeris exists as stone and geological history. Its counterpart in the Feywild exists as the feeling of permanence — vast, slow, and impossibly patient. The two expressions of the same location share a structural relationship, but the Feywild's version is always more intense, more saturated, and less bound by the constraints of matter.

Lumeris

Stone and geological history

The material expression — physical matter, geography, laws of converged planes.

Feywild

The feeling of permanence

The Feywild expression — vast, slow, impossibly patient. Always more intense, more saturated, less bound by matter.

Before the Sundering, the two layers were permeable. The Fae moved between them at will. Magic flowed from the Feywild into the material world in constant tides. Since the Sundering, the two layers are separated by a boundary that holds them apart — but the Feywild has never stopped pressing against that boundary from within.

Before the Sundering

The Age of Unity

◆

In the earliest age — before any mortal race walked Lumeris, before the Shattering of Eternities brought other worlds into the convergence — the Feywild and the material plane were one. The Primordial Fae moved through both simultaneously, as natural as breathing: shaping a mountain in the material world and feeling its echo ripple through the Feywild in the same motion. To the Primordials, the two states of the world were not different places. They were two ways of seeing the same thing.

Magic as Ambient Presence

Magic in the Age of Unity was not a resource to be gathered and spent. It was ambient — present in the air, in the ground, in the space between objects. Any being with sufficient connection to the Feywild could draw on it without ceremony or cost, because the source was everywhere at once. For ages beyond mortal counting, the Primordials existed in a world made entirely of what they were.

The earliest traces of what would become the Six Courts emerged as the Primordials grew more numerous and more specialized — their differences of elemental affinity deepening over generations into something closer to identity. These were not political formations. They were crystallizations of what the Primordials already were, given structure by the slow passage of time.

The Great Division

The Sundering

◆

The Sundering was the defining catastrophe of Fae history — a tearing event that separated the Feywild from the material plane entirely, hardening the boundary between them from a permeable membrane into something solid enough to hold two worlds apart. It happened in a single moment. Everything before it was one age. Everything after was another.

Its precise cause remains the most contested question in Fae scholarship. The Six Courts have never agreed, and since the Courts are the only witnesses old enough to have observed it directly, the disagreement is unlikely to resolve. Each Court's account reflects the elemental nature of the Court holding it.

The Embers Court

Creative Excess

The Sundering was caused by a singular act of magical excess — a Primordial attempting to reshape the boundary between the Feywild and the material world on a scale that reality could not sustain, tearing the membrane rather than reshaping it.

The Umbral Court

Inevitability

The Sundering was simply inevitable — that two expressions of the same reality occupying the same space was an inherently unstable state, and that the boundary was always going to harden once the Primordials' collective magical density reached a critical mass.

The Tides Court

The First Mortal Spell

The Sundering was caused by the first mortal spell ever cast — a being from outside the Fae pulling on the Feywild's current with such sudden, untrained force that it snapped the connection and left a scar that sealed itself.

The Aftermath

At the moment of Sundering, every Fae in the material plane was cut off from the Feywild without warning. The magical current that had flowed freely from the Feywild into the material plane stopped immediately, then returned as a reduced trickle through the hardened boundary rather than a constant tide. Magic in the mortal world became finite for the first time.

The stranded Fae faced an immediate crisis of survival. Their magical nature required connection to the Feywild for full function — cut off, many lost capabilities they had never learned to do without. Those who survived adapted fastest: learning to draw on reduced magical current through the boundary, developing Veilshift to navigate the world of larger beings, and forging relationships with mortal creatures that would offer protection in exchange for the Fae's considerable remaining power.

Domains of the Six Courts

The Feywild Territories

◆

Within the Feywild, each of the Six Courts holds a territory shaped entirely by its elemental nature. These are not kingdoms in the mortal sense — they have no defined borders drawn on maps, no armies stationed at boundaries. They are regions of the Feywild where the ambient magical current is so saturated with a particular elemental force that beings of opposing nature find it difficult or impossible to remain. The Courts' territories expand and contract with the collective presence of their members.

Since the Sundering, the territories have been partially accessible from the material world at locations where the boundary is thin — called Veil Margins by Lunari scholars. These correspond to places in Lumeris where a single elemental force dominates so completely that it creates a resonance with the Feywild territory on the other side. These points are never fully open. They are, at best, thin enough for a prepared Fae practitioner to sense the territory beyond.

The Embers Domain

The Embers Court

A landscape of perpetual golden light where fire-flowers burn without consuming themselves. The oldest Fae of the Embers Court remember reshaping entire mountain ranges here before the Sundering — their domain is a testament to the scale of what they once could do directly.

The Tidal Deep

The Tides Court

An inland ocean of memory where the water carries the accumulated experiences of every being who has ever grieved. Tides Court scholars descend into the Deep to retrieve knowledge lost from the mortal world, surfacing centuries later with information no living being could otherwise possess.

The Sky Archipelago

The Gales Court

A vast sky-world of floating islands suspended in light so clear that every object casts multiple shadows. The Gales Court does not maintain permanent structures here — their domain is defined by the wind paths connecting islands, and a Fae of the Gales navigates by current rather than destination.

The Rootworld

The Deep Roots Court

A subterranean landscape where the roots of trees from both the Feywild and every world pulled into Lumeris are entangled into a single living network carrying information across the entire realm. The Deep Roots Court believes this network is the closest thing the Feywild has to a nervous system.

The Radiant Expanse

The Radiant Court

A landscape of pure white light where the boundary between the Feywild and the material plane is thinner than anywhere else. From the Expanse, a Radiant Fae can sense events in the mortal world as clearly as reading a text — which explains their tendency toward material intervention.

The Shifting Dark

The Umbral Court

A domain that holds no fixed form — its geography rearranges itself in response to the collective emotional state of its inhabitants. The Umbral Court considers this a feature rather than a flaw. A territory that changes is a territory that cannot be predicted, and cannot be held against them.

The Living Division

The Boundary Today

◆

The boundary between the Feywild and the material plane has never been static since the Sundering. It thins during celestial events — particularly the alignments tracked by Lunari astronomers — and thickens during periods of magical drought. Where the convergence brought multiple worlds' magical currents into Lumeris, the boundary absorbed some of the stress of that collision, creating regions where it is measurably more permeable than elsewhere.

The practical effects of the boundary on magic in Lumeris are studied by every major magical tradition on the continent. Lunari Moon-Readers track its tidal fluctuations. Fae scholars map its thinnest points. Dark Elf star-readers correlate its behavior with celestial events. What they have collectively documented is consistent: the boundary is not fixed, and it is not stable. It has been thinning — slowly, measurably — over the centuries of the Age of Arrival.

What a Fully Thin Boundary Would Mean

What a fully thin boundary would mean is something every Fae scholar understands and most refuse to discuss directly. The Feywild pressing against the material world without a boundary to reduce it would not be an invasion or a conquest. It would be a saturation — ambient magical current rising to pre-Sundering levels, every elemental force more present. The Fae who have lived through the gradual thinning estimate it would be experienced by most mortal races as a world that no longer distinguishes between matter and feeling.

Documented Effects of the Thinning Boundary

◈

Veil Margins

Locations where the boundary is thin enough to sense the Feywild through, often marked by unusually intense elemental activity or emotional resonance.

◈

Magical Amplification

In proximity to powerful Fae, their presence draws the Feywild slightly closer, increasing ambient magical density within range.

◈

Emotional Resonance Bleeding

In regions close to Veil Margins, strong collective emotion occasionally manifests as minor environmental changes.

◈

Veil Tears

Rare events where the boundary temporarily dissolves at a specific point, allowing direct contact between the two realms for minutes or hours before resealing.

◈

Dreaming Contact

The boundary is thinnest during sleep; Fae-touched individuals sometimes cross it without knowing during deep dreaming.
