The Aurae

The Endless Sky — Wind-spirits of breezes and the night sky

Children of the Living Wind

The Aurae of Lumeris

The Aurae are the least grounded of all beings — and they mean that as a compliment. They are the wind-spirits, the nymphs of breezes and the night sky, bound not to tree or water or stone but to the air itself. An Aura does not walk when she can float, does not float when she can fly, and regards the ground as a place other people live. Their bond is to the sky, and the sky is everywhere, which means an Aura is never far from home.

They are the most ethereal of the Nymph kindreds — translucent, weightless, their bodies carrying a quality of light that makes them seem not entirely present even when they are standing directly in front of you. Their movements do not follow the rules that other bodies follow. An Aura responds to emotion rather than physics — her hair rises in calm anger and drops in contentment, her body drifts when she is thinking and settles when she is decided. Other races find them unsettling for this. The Aurae find other races heavy.

What they bring to Lumeris is mobility and perception. Aurae see everything from above. They move faster than any land-bound being, unimpeded by terrain, and their darkvision — adapted to a world of perpetual night sky — sees clearly where others are blind. They are the scouts, the messengers, and the watchers of the Nymph kindreds, and what they see from the sky, they remember.

The Endless Sky

Origins

The Endless Sky

The Aurae came from a world they called the Endless Sky — a realm with no ground, or at least none that any Aura had ever reached. It was a world of perpetual night sky, infinite vertical space, and wind that never stopped. The air was alive — conscious, opinionated, capable of carrying intent the way water carries minerals. The Aurae were the beings who could hear what the wind was saying, and who could say things back.

Their civilization existed in the air itself. Their homes were currents — shaped flows of wind maintained by mutual agreement between Aura and air. Their communication traveled at the speed of the gale, messages encoded in the particular texture and temperature of a breeze. An Aura could read the sky the way a scholar reads a book, and the book was always being rewritten by the wind.

When the Endless Sky began to stagnate — the wind slowing, the air growing thick and heavy, the stars dimming one by one — the Aurae felt it as a weight pressing on their bodies, a heaviness they had never known. The air stopped speaking. The currents went still. The Aurae, who had never needed ground, found themselves falling — and it was the first time in their history that they had experienced gravity as a threat. They crossed the Veil carried by the last winds of their dying world, and arrived in Lumeris gasping at the weight of an atmosphere that pressed on them from all sides. They adapted. They always do.

The Form of the Wind-Born

Physical Appearance

Aurae stand between five and five and a half feet tall with builds so slight they seem to be made of light and air rather than flesh and bone. They are the most physically delicate of the Nymph kindreds — not fragile, exactly, but weightless, their bodies carrying a density that other races find alarming when they first touch an Aura and feel how little there is to hold. They do not walk so much as they drift, each step barely touching the ground before the next lifts away.

Their coloring is the most ethereal of any Nymph kindred. Skin is pale and faintly translucent, carrying silver and ice-blue undertones that shift with the light like the sky at different hours. Their hair does not obey physics — it responds to emotional state, rising in calm anger, dropping in contentment, drifting sideways in thought. Their eyes are the colors of the sky — pale white, silver-grey, and the deep violet-black of the night between stars. In darkness, their eyes are fully luminous, and an Aura in the dark is visible only as two points of starlight.

  • Stand between five and five and a half feet tall with weightless, near-translucent builds
  • Skin pale and faintly translucent with silver and ice-blue undertones that shift with the light
  • Hair responds to emotion rather than physics — rising in calm anger, dropping in contentment, drifting in thought
  • Eyes in the colors of the sky — pale white, silver-grey, and the violet-black of the space between stars
  • Fully luminous eyes in darkness — visible only as two points of starlight
  • Can levitate and fly — the only Nymph kindred with true sustained flight
  • Barely touch the ground when walking; each step lifts away before it fully lands
  • Darkvision adapted to a world of perpetual night — see perfectly in total darkness
  • Bodies are warm-blooded but carry very little mass; extremely vulnerable to impact and force

An Aura on the ground is not weakened — she carries the sky within her — but she is always orienting upward, always feeling for the current that will lift her. The bond is not a root or a tide. It is a wind, and winds do not hold. They lift.

Communities of the Living Wind

The Wind Choirs

Aurae society is organized around Wind Choirs — communities of Aurae whose bonded winds circulate within the same atmospheric system. Each Choir is led by a Sky-Mother, the eldest Aura whose connection to the high-altitude currents is the most complete. Choirs meet at thermal columns — rising currents of warm air — and their gatherings are visible from the ground as spiraling columns of pale light that the superstitious call 'star-falls.'

The Dawn Choir

Singers of the Morning Breeze

The most outward-facing Choir, tending the gentle morning winds and dawn-lit skies of Lumeris. Dawn Aurae are the diplomats and messengers of their kind — the ones most comfortable in the company of land-dwellers, most capable of navigating the social complexities of non-Aura peoples. They are the Aurae most often encountered by other races.

The Tempest Choir

Riders of the Storm

The most powerful and feared Choir, tending the storm-winds and high-altitude gales of Lumeris. Tempest Aurae are the warriors of their kind — their flight is the fastest, their winds the fiercest, and their tempers the shortest. When the Tempest Choir descends, it is because something below has earned a storm's attention.

The Nightfall Choir

Keepers of the Starlit Dark

The most mysterious Choir, tending the night winds and the starlit skies of Lumeris's darkest hours. Nightfall Aurae are the seers and astronomers of their kind — their darkvision is the keenest, their memory of the stars the most complete. They are rarely seen in daylight, and other races who encounter them at night often mistake them for spirits rather than living beings.

When Choirs meet at a thermal column, the gathering begins with what the Aurae call the Rising — a synchronized ascent into the high atmosphere where the air thins and the stars grow close. It is both greeting and worship, for the Aurae regard the sky as sacred in a way that no other Nymph kindred regards their element.

The Way of the Wind

Culture & Society

Aurae culture is built on freedom and perception. Freedom because their reference frame is aerial — an Aura thinks in currents and altitudes, in the boundless vertical space of the sky. Perception because they see everything from above, and what you see from above, you cannot unsee. Their ethics are simple: move freely, see clearly, and never let the ground hold you. An Aura who binds herself to a single place is regarded with quiet concern — not pity, but the acknowledgment that something has gone wrong.

Their relationships with other races are the lightest of any Nymph kindred — they simply do not stay in one place long enough for relationships to deepen the way other peoples prefer. The Gale Fae are their closest kin — two peoples of the wind who understand each other without words. The Dark Elves earn respect for their shared love of the night sky. Other races find the Aurae delightful but elusive — pleasant company that is always about to leave. Their most complicated relationship is with gravity itself, which they regard as a personal affront.

An Aura who lands beside you — who chooses to stop flying and sit on the ground, at your level, for your conversation — is showing you something rare. For a being of the sky, the ground is a concession. It is not a bond. It is a landing, and landings are chosen, never forced.
