The Stoneheart Ranges — Wild nymphs of earth, mountain, and volcano
Children of the Living Stone
If the Dryads are patience and the Naiads are flow, the Oreads are force. They are the wild nymphs of earth, mountain, and volcano — the most physically formidable of the Nymph kindreds, and the most dangerous to cross. Where other Nymphs are bound to living things that grow and move, Oreads are bound to stone that does neither, and this gives them a quality the others lack: permanence. An Oread does not weaken with distance from her mountain. She carries the mountain within her, in her bones, in her skin, in the molten core of her magic.
They are not gentle. The Oreads are the nymphs of earthquakes and eruptions, of the slow grinding force that builds mountains and the sudden violence that tears them apart. Their temperament runs hot — literally, for the volcanic Oreads carry fire in their blood that surfaces in anger. But their violence is not cruelty. It is geology. An Oread does not erupt without reason, any more than a volcano does. When she does, the reason is usually sufficient.
What they bring to Lumeris is durability and raw power. Oread magic is the magic of earth and fire — stone that hardens to armor, tremors that sense approach through solid ground, volcanic bursts that can shatter fortifications. They are the bulwark of the Nymph kindreds, and when the groves are threatened, it is the Oreads who hold the line.

Origins
The Oreads came from a world they called the Stoneheart Ranges — a realm of colossal mountains and volcanic activity so intense that the ground itself was alive with tectonic force. There was no flat land in the Stoneheart Ranges; everything was vertical, everything was stone, and the stone was conscious in a way that Lumeris's geology is not. The mountains had moods. The volcanoes had tempers. And the Oreads were the beings who spoke their language.
Oread civilization existed on and within the mountains. Their homes were caverns carved by volcanic heat and shaped by patient negotiation with the stone. Their communication traveled through the bedrock itself — tremors encoded with meaning, seismic whispers that an Oread could read through the soles of her feet. A mountain in the Stoneheart Ranges was as much a community as a city, and the Oreads were its voice.
When the Stoneheart Ranges began to collapse — the tectonic forces destabilizing, the mountains cracking from within, the volcanoes going dormant or erupting without pattern — the Oreads felt it as a breaking in their own bones. The stone stopped speaking. The tremors went chaotic. The Oreads could not save their world — you cannot negotiate with a dying tectonic plate — but they carried with them the crystallized heart-stones of their bonded mountains, and those stones now rest at the cores of Lumeris's mightiest peaks, seeded there in the early years of the Age of Arrival.
The Form of the Stone-Born
Oreads stand between five and a half and six and a half feet tall with builds that carry the dense, solid weight of stone — broader and more muscular than other Nymph kindreds, moving with a deliberate heaviness that other races read as slowness but that is simply mass. When an Oread plants her feet, she does not move. This is not stubbornness. It is geology.
Their coloring is unmistakably mineral. Skin tones run to warm greys, stone-browns, and the particular amber-veined darkness of volcanic rock. Their texture is subtly rough — not bark-like but stone-smooth, the way river-polished granite feels. Their hair grows in crystalline strands and dark obsidian filaments that catch light like mineral deposits. Their eyes are the colors of the deep earth — amber, ember-orange, and the particular gold of molten rock. The volcanic Oreads carry a warmth beneath their skin that is perceptible to the touch, and in anger, veins of molten light trace across their arms and face.
An Oread away from her mountain does not weaken — she carries the stone in her bones — but she is always feeling for the bedrock, always testing the ground beneath her feet for the tremors that are her first language. The bond is not a root. It is a foundation, and foundations do not reach. They hold.
Communities of the Living Stone
Oread society is organized around Stone Holds — communities of Oreads whose bonded mountains exist within the same mountain range. Each Hold is led by a Peak-Mother, the eldest Oread whose heart-stone is the deepest and whose connection to the bedrock is the most complete. Holds meet at fault lines — where two tectonic plates meet — and their gatherings are seismic events that sensitive instruments across Lumeris can detect.
Wardens of the High Peaks
The oldest and most respected Hold, tending the highest mountain peaks in Lumeris. Granite Oreads are the most patient and enduring of their kind — their stone is the hardest, their tempers the slowest to ignite. They are the historians of the Oreads, their memories carved into the living rock in a script that only they can read.
Keepers of the Volcanic Regions
The most feared and powerful Hold, tending the active volcanic regions of Lumeris. Basalt Oreads carry the fire of the deep earth in their blood, and their magic is the most destructive of any Nymph kindred. They are not violent without cause, but when the Basalt Hold goes to war, the ground itself fights with them.
Guardians of the Deep Caverns
The most mysterious Hold, tending the vast crystalline caverns beneath Lumeris's mountains. Crystal Oreads are the seers and diviners of their kind — the crystalline structures they tend amplify and focus seismic and magical vibrations, allowing them to see events happening miles away through the stone. Their counsel is sought by every Hold.
When Holds meet at a fault line, the gathering begins with what the Oreads call the Deep Pulse — a synchronized tremor sent through the bedrock that announces their presence to every mountain in range. It is both greeting and warning, for the Oreads understand that the earth does not distinguish between the two.
The Way of the Stone
Oread culture is built on endurance and force. Endurance because their reference frame is geological — an Oread thinks in millennia, in the slow time of stone. Force because their world was shaped by tectonic pressure, and they understand that nothing permanent is built without it. Their ethics are simple: hold your ground, protect your foundation, and erupt only when the pressure leaves no alternative. An Oread who erupts without sufficient cause is not punished. She is simply regarded as unstable, and unstable stone is avoided.
Their relationships with other races are the most distant of any Nymph kindred. The Dwarves earn genuine respect — two peoples who understand stone from the inside. The Drakari earn grudging acknowledgment for their volcanic kinship. Other races find the Oreads intimidating, and the Oreads do little to discourage this. Their warmest relationship is with the Ember Fae, who share their orientation toward the transformative power of fire. Their coolest is with races that mine stone without asking the mountain first. The Oreads are willing to teach respect. They teach with tremors.
An Oread who gives you a stone from her bonded mountain is giving you something that cannot be replaced — a piece of the foundation that defines her. To carry it is to carry her weight, her endurance, and her protection. It is not a gift. It is a foundation, and foundations do not let go.

The Chronicle Ends… For Now
The Oreads are the wild nymphs of earth, mountain, and volcano — the most physically formidable of the Nymph kindreds, bound to the living stone that is their foundation and home. Born in the Stoneheart Ranges, a world of colossal peaks and conscious geology, they crossed the Veil carrying the crystallized heart-stones of their bonded mountains and seeded them into Lumeris's mightiest peaks. Organized across three Stone Holds — Granite, Basalt, and Crystal — they tend the mountains and volcanic regions of Lumeris with a devotion measured in millennia, not years. Enduring, powerful, and carrying the fire of the deep earth in their blood, they hold their ground as the mountain holds — patient, immovable, and erupting only when the pressure demands it.
They are the voice of the living stone.
They are the force that builds mountains.
They are the Oreads — enduring as granite, fierce as the volcano, and bound to the stone that gives them form.
