Bioveil Studies

The Living Veil Within

◆

Lunari scholars were the first to document what they call the Bioveil — a micro-scale expression of the Astral Weave that runs not through ley-lines in the ground, but through the bodies of living creatures. Where standard Weave theory treats magic as an external force, Bioveil Studies treats it as an internal one: woven into cell structure, blood composition, and neural pathways in ways that vary by race, plane of origin, and convergence exposure.

Their instruments — refined over three generations of research — can detect Bioveil density in a living subject at a distance of up to thirty feet. Races that arrived from magically rich planes register higher ambient Bioveil saturation, which the Lunari believe explains why some peoples adapt more readily to casting, why others are physically stronger, and why the Fae occasionally phase partially out of reality without intending to.

The Controversial Finding

The most controversial finding from Bioveil Studies is that the Bioveil in a living subject responds to emotional state. Fear, grief, and rage each produce measurably distinct resonance signatures. Some Lunari researchers have proposed that this is the biological origin of all intuitive magic — and that formal spell-casting is simply a civilised refinement of what every living body already does without knowing.

Medicine & Anatomy

The Cartography of the Body

◆

Lunari medicine diverged from the healing traditions of other races early on. Where Clerics and Healers channel divine or nature energy to mend wounds, the Lunari insisted on understanding why the wound existed before deciding how to treat it. They developed detailed anatomical records for every race they could study — cataloguing skeletal structure, organ placement, blood chemistry, and the precise pathways through which Bioveil energy moves through different body types.

Their anatomical atlases — produced in the first two centuries of the Age of Arrival — are now considered indispensable reference texts in every major city with a healing guild. The Dwarves initially refused to allow Lunari anatomists to study their dead, but relented after the Lunari correctly diagnosed and treated a bone-plague that had been consuming Ironvault's lower districts for eleven years.

Resonant Surgery

Lunari surgeons do not work alone. Every procedure of significance involves at least one mana reader, who monitors Bioveil disruption in real time and adjusts the flow of ambient magic around the patient. This technique — called Resonant Surgery — has a dramatically higher survival rate than conventional healing in cases where the injury involves structural damage near a major Bioveil pathway, which conventional healers often cannot detect.

The Laboratories of the Convergence

Five Institutes of Inquiry

◆

As Lunari research expanded beyond what any single scholar could contain, five permanent research institutions were established across Lumeris — each focusing on a distinct intersection of science, magic, and biology. Together they are called the Laboratories of the Convergence. They do not answer to any government, any king, or any guild. They answer only to evidence.

Each laboratory maintains a standing library, a field observation network, and a council of seven senior researchers whose published work must pass review by at least two other laboratories before it is considered established knowledge. This slow, deliberate process is often mocked by politicians who want answers faster. The Lunari consider the mockery a compliment.

The five laboratories collaborate formally twice per year at the Convergence Symposium — a gathering held in rotating host cities that is, despite its academic framing, one of the most politically significant events in Lumeris. What the laboratories publish shapes policy, changes trade routes, and occasionally reclassifies what it means to be a particular race entirely.

The Veilweave Institute

North of the Singing Meridian

Seated within a Veil Node cluster north of the Singing Meridian, the Veilweave Institute studies the intersection of the Bioveil with the wider Astral Weave. Their most contested current project is mapping what happens to a soul's Bioveil signature in the moments following death — and whether that signature persists.

The Convergence Anatomy Society

Ashveil

Based in the neutral city of Ashveil, the Anatomy Society maintains the largest collection of cross-racial anatomical records in Lumeris. They accept subjects from every race voluntarily and pay in silver and knowledge. Their current project is a full comparative atlas of all twenty races — fourteen volumes complete, six still in progress.

The Astral Observatory

Above the Moonfall Scar

Perched at altitude above the Moonfall Scar, the Astral Observatory tracks celestial bodies, lunar tidal effects on Bioveil density, and the long-cycle resonance patterns the Lunari associate with the Broken Moons prophecy. They are the only institution with a standing prediction model for Veil Node instability events.

The Mana Resonance Laboratory

Lunari Settlements

The most applied of the five, the Mana Resonance Laboratory develops instruments and constructs that use controlled Bioveil interaction to perform work — from the arcane telescopes that see through dimensional interference, to mana reactors that power entire districts of Lunari settlements. Their patents are the primary source of Lunari institutional funding.

The Planar Cartography Division

Classified

The quietest and most secretive of the five, the Planar Cartography Division maps the planar remnants that make up the stitched geography of Lumeris. They correlate geological boundaries with original plane-of-origin data to determine which lands belong, at a deep structural level, to which collapsed world — and what that means for the Titan Seals sleeping beneath them.
